Description

The War Memorial is a World War I memorial built in 1922. It features a bronze figure created by R. Tait McKenzie, set on a stone-faced brick plinth. The memorial has a rectangular shape, with a base that includes inscriptions supporting a sarcophagus that has rounded ends on the north and south sides. The sarcophagus is adorned with a high-relief plaque on the east side and coats of arms on the other three sides. Atop the sarcophagus stands a full-size bronze figure of a British soldier in military dress, striding forward with a rifle slung and gazing to the right. Originally located in the middle of Hills Road, the memorial was moved in 2012 to the pavement in front of the Botanic Garden.
