Description
Wanstead House, built around 1825, is a two-storey building made of gault brick with plaster dressings and a hipped slate roof. The front is symmetrically designed, featuring a cornice with dentils and modillions, three windows with moulded architraves and glazing bars, and a central doorway. The doorway has an eared architrave and swags on the frieze above, flanked by fluted Corinthian columns that support an entablature with a pulvinated frieze and dentilled cornice. This building is particularly significant as it includes features from Colen Campbell's first major work, Wanstead House in Essex, which was demolished in 1824. Notable elements include the entrance doorcase, other doorcases, window architraves, panelling, and plasterwork, with the dining room being especially rich in these fittings. The interior also features marble fireplaces and a fine wrought-iron balustrade on the staircase, along with some good fittings from 1825. Wanstead House is part of a group with Nos 2 to 22 (even).
