Description
The Scott Polar Research Institute is a research institute and museum built between 1933 and 1934 by Sir Herbert Baker. It features yellow brick laid in Flemish bond with stone dressings and has a machine-tiled roof, showcasing a classical style. The building is two storeys high with a dormer attic.
The north front has a four-window range, with the central two window bays slightly recessed and adorned with stone quoins, which are also present at the main angles. The entrance consists of central double timber doors set within a raised surround. On either side of the doors are large arched sash windows, each with carved keystones. Above these windows is a circular niche that holds a bust of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, the explorer. A stone platband runs between the floors, and the outer bays each have one horned sash window on both floors. The building is topped with a stone balustraded parapet, which features the inscription: QV AESlVIT ARCANA POLIV ADET DEI. The hipped roof includes four hipped dormers fitted with casements, and the returns have three horned sashes on each floor, with two hipped dormers on the west return, one on the east return, and a chimney stack.
Inside, the two arched windows illuminate small interconnecting halls that have shallow domed ceilings painted with representations of the globe from the north pole (west) and south pole (east), created by MacDonald Gill in 1934. There is a coffered transverse arch between the two halls, and in front of them are a pair of unfluted columns on either side, topped with gold-painted palmette capitals.
