Description
The Royal Albert Homes, located on Hills Road and Brooklands Avenue, were built in the mid to late 19th century by Peck and Stephens of Maidstone. The complex consists of three distinct blocks.
Nos. 9-20, facing Hills Road, were built around a foundation stone dated 1859 and are designed in the Gothic style. The buildings are constructed from grey gault brick with red and blue brick dressings and a string course. They are two storeys high, with pointed-headed windows consisting of six lights at the bottom and two lights above. A panelled central tower is present, though the clock is missing. The roofs are slate, characterised by a variety of gable sizes.
Nos. 1-8, which face Brooklands Avenue, were constructed in 1877 and 1879, as indicated by dates on different gables. They share a similar appearance to the main block, but without the central tower. The gables are arranged in a pattern of LSSSLLSSSL, with the larger gables set forward.
Nos. 21-25, located at the rear of the site, are likely a later addition. They consist of only five gables and feature simpler decorative details.
