Description
The Bell Inn is a late 14th century building with alterations from the 15th and 16th centuries, located on the east side of High Road in Horndon-on-the-Hill. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with some painted brick and a red plain tile roof. The inn is two storeys high and has a three-window range of double hung vertical sliding sashes with glazing bars, including two three-light sash windows and modern doors at the ground floor. The north elevation has a jettied design with the original framing exposed, while modern casements are also present. A carriage arch with a projecting upper storey is gabled above. The building has a complex plan, including a crosswing at the south end that dates to the late 14th or early 15th century, featuring an oversailed roof. The front range is primarily from the 15th century, with 16th-century additions at the rear. Inside, there are hollow chamfered tie beams, crown post roofs, moulded beams, and a 15th-century window and doorway.
