Description
The Carriage/Wagon Shed at Horseshoe Barracks in Southend on Sea is a vehicle shed built around the 1860s. Originally part of the British School of Gunnery, it now serves as workshops and stores. The structure features a cast-iron frame with wrought-iron trusses and a corrugated iron roof, along with mid-20th century rendered infill. The iron frame consists of I-section beams bolted together, with cast brackets supporting the gutter. The curved ends have sunken panels on round posts, which rest on sandstone plinths at the southern end where the ground slopes down. Inside, the shed has wrought-iron trusses with round ties and angle iron struts. The School of the Royal Artillery opened in 1859, and this building is noted as an example of a prefabricated store that was part of a complete mid-19th century barracks.
