Description

The West Powder Magazine at Shoebury Garrison is a powder magazine built between 1852 and 1853. It is constructed of stock brick with stone dressings and features a bitumen roof. The building has a square plan and includes a lean-to porch on the east side that contains a 20th-century iron door facing north. The exterior shows the positions of three cast-iron ventilator grills, some of which have wooden shutters, indicating a cavity wall and solid vault. There is a blocked opening in the west wall, and the roof is low-pitched and hipped. The interior has not been inspected. This magazine is one of only two surviving at the establishment and is notable as one of the first brick buildings constructed there, serving as an important functional element within the British School of Gunnery.
