Description
The Inner Bailey Magazine is a magazine building constructed in 1827, though it may be a replacement from the 1850s. It is made of coursed red sandstone ashlar resting on a chamfered plinth and features a graduated greenslate roof. The structure is single storey and consists of a single bay. The central sash window is barred and set in a stone surround, with slit vents located beneath hoodmoulds. There are inverted T-shaped vents in the plinth. The left side wall includes a recessed 20th-century plank door in a stone surround, with a similar window and vents above it and on the other side wall. The front wall displays a painted letter "H," which has been over-painted by a smaller "G," part of the original 19th-century barrack lettering. Inside, the magazine has a stone vaulted roof, but it lacks its original wooden racking. The Castle is recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
