Description
The Outer Bailey Garrison Cells and Custodian's Office at Carlisle Castle were built in 1832 and 1840. They are constructed from squared blocks of red sandstone and brick, resting on a chamfered red sandstone plinth. The buildings feature a greenslate roof with brick chimney stacks. They consist of single-storey lean-to structures, except for the central cells which have a gabled roof and are built against the south curtain wall of the outer bailey. The two-bay cells on the left were built in 1832, while the three-bay central cells, constructed in 1840, have a higher roof line. To the right is an eight-bay office/shed range, also from 1840. The cells feature upper barred windows, with segmental arches on the left and a sash window with glazing bars in stone surrounds above the right doorway. The shed/office is divided into two parts, with three bays and five bays under a common roof, and includes a left plank double door and flanking sash windows with glazing bars. The interiors have not been inspected. The castle is recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
