Description
The Ypres Block is a barrack block built between 1836 and 1837, with some additions to the rear. It features English bond brickwork with a stone cornice and a hipped roof made of graduated greenslate, topped with regularly spaced 19th-century brick chimney stacks. The building has three storeys and 15 bays, along with a basement that has a railed area. Access to the ground floor is provided by two porch bridges, which have plank doors set in stone surrounds beneath fanlights. A central door has been converted into a window, and its porch has been removed. The building has sash windows with glazing bars, set in brick reveals, and features stone sills and lintels. A central painted stone panel on the upper level is inscribed with "YPRES," commemorating one of the battle honours of the Border Regiment. The interior and rear extensions are not of particular interest. The Castle is also recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
