Description

The Outer Bailey Officers' Mess is a building that serves as an officers' mess and regimental offices, constructed in 1876 on the site of a 1640s south-west battery, incorporating part of that earlier structure. It is made of red sandstone ashlar set on a chamfered plinth, topped with a slightly projecting and corbelled parapet. The building features a hipped roof made of graduated greenslate and has rear chimney stacks also made of red sandstone ashlar. It is two storeys high with six irregular bays.

The off-centre storeyed porch, located in bay three, has double panelled doors and an overlight, all within a stone surround and topped by a continuous hoodmould. The windows throughout the building are 12- and 16-pane sash types, set in stone surrounds and also under hoodmoulds; notably, the upper floor right window is a three-light mullion. The rear wall of the building incorporates part of the demolished battery wall. The interior has not been inspected. For further details, refer to McCarthy et al (1990). The Castle is recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
