Description

Ousefield is a house, now serving as an officers mess, built in 1899 by Walter Brierley. The building is constructed of brown brick with red brick quions and orange brick window surrounds, featuring ashlar coped gables with plain kneelers and four tall plain chimney stacks. It has a graduated Westmorland slate roof and a chamfered brick plinth. The house is two storeys plus an attic.

The street front displays a symmetrical five-window facade with a slightly projecting central bay. The central projecting porch is supported by square Tuscan Doric columns and features a segmental arched hood resembling an open pediment, a panel door with an overlight, and a brick head with three ashlar keystones. There are single side light windows set back on either side of the porch. Above, there is a canted bay window with cross casements, pilasters, and a domed roof, followed by a four-light dormer window. On either side, there are single 18-pane sash windows with 12-pane sashes above, and above those, single brick gables with four-light casement windows. The outer bays each have two-storey canted bay windows with coped parapets, featuring three 18-pane windows on the ground floor and three 12-pane sashes above.

The interior retains many original features, including the main staircase with turned balusters and a back stair with stick balusters. Ground floor rooms have original doors, door surrounds, fireplaces, alcoves, and coving. The upper floors also retain original doors and some fireplaces.
