Description

Imphal Barracks: The Keep is an armoury, guardhouse, and store built between 1877 and 1880, designed by Major H. C. Seddon from the Royal Engineers at the War Office. The building is constructed of red brick with terracotta bands and stone dressings, featuring lateral stacks and an asphalt roof in the Fortress Tudor Gothic Revival style.

It has a rectangular plan with a ground-floor guard room, detention cells, corner stairs, and stores on the upper floors. The exterior is three stories high and consists of a seven-bay range with four-stage towers. The design includes square corner stair towers, a brick corbel cornice, and a crenellated parapet. There are black brick bands at the cills and heads of the windows, which are 6/6-pane sashes with cambered heads and stone cills. Entrances are located on the left return and rear, featuring cambered-head doorways. The towers have staggered slit windows for the stairs, and the rear tower facing the parade includes a clock.

Inside, the building has a fireproof interior supported by cast-iron columns and flat ceilings, possibly replacing earlier jack arch floors. The stone closed-well stairs have stone treads. Historically, The Keep served as a secure armoury, stores, guardhouse, and lock-up, and was a characteristic building of the Localisation depots established during the Cardwell reforms. These reforms aimed to redistribute barracks across the country to strengthen local connections and assist in recruitment. As a result, The Keep enhanced the local profile of the barracks and served as an emblematic focus for the regiment. It is one of only ten remaining examples of this significant type of structure.
