Description
The Inner Bailey Militia Store, built in 1881, is now used as toilets and a storeroom. It features coursed red sandstone ashlar on a chamfered plinth, with a string course and a dentilled cornice. The building has a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and is two storeys high with six bays. There are plank doors on the left and right, set in segmental-arched plain reveals, accessed by steps. Iron-framed casement windows are also present in plain reveals. A contemporary lift shaft projects from the left return wall. A letter "H" painted above the left doorway dates back to the 19th century when each building was assigned a barrack letter. The interior retains its original manual lift gear. The Castle is recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
