Description
The building is a disused barrack block located north of the officers' barracks at St George's Barracks, constructed between 1856 and 1859. It is made of yellow stock brick with stone dressings and features a flat roof. The structure has a double-depth axial plan and is a single storey with a basement, displaying a near-symmetrical front with a ground-floor band, cornice, and parapet. The façade includes a 4:4:4:4:2-window arrangement, with four entrances that are divided into sections, each having stone surrounds, cornices, overlights, and margin lights, leading to 20th-century doors. The entrances are accessed by stairs that bridge the basement area. The windows feature rubbed brick heads and 6/6-pane sashes on both levels.
Inside, the barrack contains dogleg stairs from the entrances, with a front passage that connects the rooms, along with original joinery, panelled doors, and plasterwork. The building is complemented by attached cast-iron railings, which have panels with diagonal bars leading to the entrance stairs and round basement areas.
Historically, this barrack block is believed to have served as married quarters and included a former school room. It functioned as a transit station for infantry after the Crimean War and was designed to be bomb-proof due to its location just inside the Gosport Lines. This barrack is the only example of its type in the country and forms a complete group with the Lines earthworks, highlighting Gosport's significance in the defensive structures surrounding the Portsmouth dockyard.
