Description
The Pump House is a horse engine house located in the Royal Clarence Victualling Yard, built in 1778. It is constructed of brick and features a pyramidal roof topped with an octagonal louvre and a fleche. The building has an octagonal plan and contains a small house that houses a pump over a well. It is designed with three round-arched windows and a doorway that has a recessed brick roundel.
Inside, the Pump House contains the well head and some late 19th-century pumping equipment. Historically, the horse engine was essential for pumping large quantities of water regularly. From 1989, it served as a valve house for the Gosport Water Company's mains access to the Yard. Originally, it was used to pump water from a well to supply the Admiralty Brewhouse, which was located in Brewhouse Square.
