Description
The building is a disused barrack block located opposite the entrance to the Royal Clarence Yard at St George's Barracks, constructed between 1856 and 1859. It is made of yellow stock brick and features lateral stacks with a flat roof. The structure has a single-depth axial plan and is a single storey with a basement, displaying a symmetrical front with a five-window range on each side. The façade includes a ground-floor band, cornice, and parapet, with entrances at both ends dividing the front into three sections. The middle section has blind windows, while the entrances feature margin and overlights above 20th-century doors, with stairs leading to the basement area. The windows are fitted with rubbed brick heads and 6/6-pane sashes on both levels.
The interior has not been inspected but is reported to contain separate apartments for married soldiers. The barrack block is accompanied by attached cast-iron railings, which have panels with diagonal bars surrounding the entrance stairs and basement areas. Historically, this building is believed to have served as married quarters and was part of a transit station for infantry built after the Crimean War. It was designed to be bomb-proof due to its location just inside the Gosport Lines. This barrack block is the only example of its type in the country and forms a complete group with the Lines earthworks, highlighting Gosport's significance in the defensive structures surrounding the Portsmouth dockyard.
