Description

The Cooperage East Range is a building located in the Royal Clarence Victualling Yard, constructed in 1766. Originally used for making barrels for the Navy's rum issue until 1970, it is now utilized as an office and store. The structure is made of brick and features a plain tile roof that is hipped at the southern end. It has a single-depth plan divided into two equal sections, each with an 8-window range and a single storey.

The exterior of the building was once part of a longer range that extended to the north, adjacent to the former cooper's square. The sections are separated by a fire wall that rises through the roof. The central doorways are segmental-arched with boarded doors, and the mid-20th century replacement windows also have similar arched heads, set in flush frames.

Inside, the building features timber trusses. Initially built as five sheds for storing new casks, the southern three units were converted into a coopers' shop in 1830, while the remaining sections continued to serve as storage. In 1864, the installation of a steam saw led to the re-fenestration of part of the southern half, evident in the enlarged windows on the eastern elevation. The cooperage was constructed next to the Weevil Brewery, which was built two years earlier and is now incorporated within the cooperage buildings. The Cooperage East Range forms one side of the cooper's square, alongside the western and southern ranges, where barrels were stacked. Clarence is recognized as one of the first large industrial food processing plants in the country, reflecting the significant scale of the Navy's victualling operations at this important riverside location.
