Description

The main gate and two lodges form part of the Royal Clarence Victualling Yard. Constructed between 1830 and 1831, they were designed by G L Taylor, the architect to the Navy Board. The buildings are primarily brick, with a stucco finish to the inner front, brick stacks, and slate hipped roofs, reflecting a Late Georgian style.

The gateway is the focal point, featuring a round-arched triumphal arch flanked by single-depth guard houses. The arch has paired pilasters rising to an entablature, with a plinth displaying royal coats of arms facing outwards. Lower screen walls incorporate pedestrian doorways with architraves and cornices. Spear-headed cast-iron gates, paired with dog bars, are set within the carriageway, with cannon bollards marking its edges. Curved inner screens feature colonnades of six Roman Doric columns supporting an entablature and leading to flagged steps. The original arrangement included a low door set into a splay beneath a corbelled corner to the left of the arch, alongside later 4/4-pane sash windows and a door. The exterior walls are brick, with curved sections flanking the entrance.

The interior of the buildings has not been inspected. Historically, the archway served as the formal entrance to the Victualling Yard and was designed as part of a symmetrical plan, similar in concept to those at Deptford and Devonport, however on a smaller scale and with more alterations. It is one of the first large industrial food processing plants, demonstrating the significant scale of the Navy's victualling operations.
