Description

The East Powder Magazine at Shoebury Garrison is a powder magazine built between 1852 and 1853. It is constructed of stock brick with stone dressings and features a bitumen roof. The building has a square plan and includes a lean-to porch on the east side, which contains a 20th-century iron door facing north.

On the exterior, there are positions for three cast-iron ventilator grills, some of which have wooden shutters, located on two sides of the building, indicating a cavity wall and solid vault. There is also a blocked opening in the west wall, and the roof is low-pitched and hipped.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this magazine is significant as one of only two surviving magazines at the establishment and is among the first brick buildings constructed there. It is recognized as an important functional element within the former British School of Gunnery.
