Description
F and G The Terrace at Horseshoe Barracks are a pair of semi-detached officers' houses built between 1861 and 1862 for the British School of Gunnery. Constructed from yellow stock brick, they feature rubbed brick heads, a central ridge and end gable stacks, and a slate roof. The houses have a double-depth plan and are two storeys tall with an attic, presenting a symmetrical front with a four-window range. The coped gables, which have kneelers set forward one bay from the ends, are complemented by a first-floor brick string and cill courses, as well as a moulded brick eaves cornice.
The end entrance bays are set back and include segmental-arched doorways with plate-glass overlights and four-panel doors. The ground floor has segmental-arched 2/2-pane sashes, with keys, while G house features mid-20th century casements in the inner ground-floor windows. Above, two pairs of gabled dormers with plate-glass sashes are connected by a parapet. The gables have canted, parapeted bays and first-floor tripartite windows with plate-glass sashes, along with flat-headed attic 2/2-pane sashes. The returns have gables to the rear and a gabled dormer toward the front, while the rear includes single-storey service blocks. The interior has not been inspected. The Royal Artillery School opened in 1859, and these houses contain architectural features that reflect the rank of their occupants.
