Description

P and Q Barracks, located at the British School of Gunnery in Shoebury Garrison, was built in 1859 by Captain J Inglis of the Royal Engineers. This barrack block is constructed from yellow stock brick and features rubbed brick heads, gable and axial stacks, and a slate roof. The building has a single-depth plan with rear service wings.

The exterior is two storeys high and includes a ten-window range along with single-storey, one-window end non-commissioned officer blocks. The front is symmetrical, featuring a plat band and overhanging eaves, with rubbed brick flat arches above the entrances, which are located three bays from the ends. These entrances have three-pane overlights and double doors with six raised panels, along with six-over-six pane sash windows. The end blocks have round-arched doorways in the gables, complete with radial fanlights and double six-panel doors. The rear of the building has similar window arrangements, with two-storey service wings that are two bays deep, outer segmental-arched doorways, and small rear gable stacks.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is reported to contain dogleg stairs from the entrances with metal balusters and heated barrack rooms. Historically, this barrack is one of a group of eight arranged around a circular parade ground, representing a unique example of reformed barrack planning with its use of smaller separate buildings.
