Description
L and M Barracks, located at Horseshoe Barracks in Shoebury Garrison, is a barrack block built in 1859, with drawings signed by Captain J Inglis of the Royal Engineers. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with rubbed brick heads, gable and axial stacks, and features a slate roof. It has a single-depth plan with rear service wings.
The exterior is two storeys high and features a ten-window range, with single-storey, one-window end blocks. The front is symmetrical, showcasing a plat band and overhanging eaves, with rubbed brick flat arches above the entrances located three bays from the ends. These entrances include three-pane overlights and double doors with six raised panels, as well as six-over-six pane sash windows. The end blocks have round-arched doorways in the gables, complete with radial fanlights and double six-panel doors. The rear of the building has similar window arrangements, along with two-storey service wings that are two bays deep, featuring outer segmental-arched doorways and small rear gable stacks.
The interior has not been inspected but is reported to contain dogleg stairs from the entrances with metal balusters, along with heated barrack rooms. Historically, this barrack block is part of a group of eight barracks arranged around a circular parade ground, representing a unique example of reformed barracks planning through its use of smaller separate buildings.
