Description
E and F Barracks, located at the Horseshoe Barracks, is a barrack block built in 1859 for the British School of Gunnery, with drawings signed by Captain J Inglis of the Royal Engineers. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick, featuring rubbed brick heads, gable and axial stacks, and a slate roof. It has a single-depth plan with rear service wings.
The exterior stands two storeys tall and includes a ten-window range with single-storey, one-window end blocks. The front is symmetrical, showcasing a plat band and overhanging eaves, with rubbed brick flat arches above the entrances, which are positioned three bays from the ends. These entrances feature three-pane overlights and double doors with six raised panels, alongside six-over-six pane sash windows. The end blocks have round-arched doorways in the gables, complete with radial fanlights and double six-panel doors. The rear of the building has similar window arrangements and includes two-storey service wings that are two bays deep, with outer segmental-arched doorways and small rear gable stacks.
The interior has not been inspected but is reported to contain dogleg stairs from the entrances with metal balusters, as well as heated barrack rooms. Historically, this barrack is part of a group of eight arranged around a circular parade ground and is noted for its unique approach to reformed barrack planning through the use of smaller separate buildings.
