Description
The cookhouse located at the rear of Block CD in the Horseshoe Barracks was built in 1859 as part of the British School of Gunnery. It is constructed from yellow stock brick and features a slate hipped roof with a square single room plan.
On the exterior, this small ancillary unit has 6/6-pane sash windows at each end and an entrance facing the barrack, along with a raised ridge that includes side louvres. The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, separate cookhouses were an innovation for barracks, where food was typically prepared in the men's rooms. This cookhouse is recognized as a very rare example of an important functional part of the barracks, which itself is a unique instance of military planning.
