Description
The Cook House located at the rear of Block EF in the Horseshoe Barracks, built in 1859 for the British School of Gunnery, is constructed of yellow stock brick and features a slate hipped roof. This small ancillary unit has a square single room plan, with 6/6-pane sash windows at each end and an entrance facing the barrack, which includes a raised ridge with side louvres. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, separate cook houses were an innovation in barracks, where food was typically prepared in the living quarters. This cook house is considered a very rare example of its type and is an important functional component of the barracks, which is itself a unique instance of military planning.
