Description
Building 97 in the East Barracks is a cook house, now used as practice rooms, built around 1814 by Edward Holl, an architect for the Navy Board. The structure is made of yellow stock brick with rubbed brick dressings and features a hipped slate roof. It is designed in the late Georgian style and has three storeys with a symmetrical front that includes a deep overhanging boxed eaves. The facade has a two-by-four window arrangement, with rubbed brick flat arches above a doorway that contains a six-panel door and a three-pane overlight. The windows are primarily six-over-six pane sashes, with three-over-six pane sashes on the second floor. The shallow returns of the building have blind windows, and the rear has a narrow central window that appears to have been bricked up, extending through two storeys. To the left of the main building is a later single-storey addition with two eight-over-eight pane sashes. Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have a stair flight with uncut string and stick balusters in the right-hand room. Historically, this building was shown in 1840 as the cook house for the hospital, which included a fumigation house on the right. It is included in the listing for its historic interest related to the hospital.
