Description

Building 66 and 67 and the attached rear wall are a pair of officer's houses built between 1810 and 1830. They are made of rendered brick and feature rendered ridge and rear lateral stacks, topped with a hipped slate roof. Designed in a late Georgian style, the buildings have a double-depth plan, are two storeys high with a basement, and present a symmetrical front with a ten-window range. The end pairs of windows are set forward with overhanging eaves, and there are mid-20th century porches at the ends of the central section leading to round-arched doorways with batswing fanlights and six-panel doors. The ground floor has horned six-over-six pane sash windows, while the right-hand house on the first floor has three-over-three pane sashes, and the left-hand house has mid-20th century casements. Each house has two-window sides, and at the rear, there are single-storey service blocks.

Inside, there is a central stair hall featuring a staircase with an uncut string, column newels, stick balusters, and a ramped rail, along with panelled shutters and cornices. A first-floor fireplace has fluted jambs and raised crowns. An attached rear brick wall connects these houses with Nos 65 and 67, which are also of special interest. Historically, these houses were built for officers at the former Deal military hospital, one of the first army hospitals in England established in 1797, and they represent the last remaining part of the complex. They were likely intended for the surgeon and other officials, similar to the c1814 houses at the East Barracks of the former naval hospital, and they form an interesting group.
