Description
Building 68 and the attached rear wall at North Barracks is an officer's house constructed between 1810 and 1830. It is made of rendered brick and features rendered ridge and rear lateral stacks, topped with a hipped slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan with a rear right-hand wing and stands two storeys tall, with a three-window range. The symmetrical front has overhanging eaves and includes a mid-20th century porch that leads to round-arched doorways, which are adorned with batswing fanlights and six-panel doors. The ground floor has 6/6-pane sash windows, while the first floor features mid-20th century casements. The left side has three windows, and the right side has four windows. At the rear, there is a flat-roofed stair tower and a single-storey service block. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to contain original stairs and fireplaces. The attached rear wall connects with buildings 65 and 67. Historically, this building was part of the Deal military hospital, one of the first military hospitals in England, built in 1797, and it represents the last remaining section of that complex. These houses were likely intended for the surgeon and other officials, similar to the c1814 houses at the East Barracks of the former naval hospital, and they form an interesting group.
