Description
Building 65 and the attached rear wall at North Barracks is an officer's house constructed between 1810 and 1830. It is made of rendered brick with rendered ridge stacks and features a hipped slate roof. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in the late Georgian style. It stands two storeys tall and has a symmetrical front with overhanging eaves. A mid-20th century porch leads to a round-arched doorway that includes a batswing fanlight and a six-panel door. The ground floor has horned six-over-six pane sash windows, while the first floor features mid-20th century casements. The sides of the building have three windows each. At the rear, there is a central flat-roofed stair tower and a single-storey service block. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to contain original joinery and stairs. A subsidiary feature includes the attached rear brick wall that connects with Buildings 66 and 67. Historically, this building was constructed as housing for officers at the former Deal military hospital, one of the first army hospitals in England, established in 1797. The houses likely served the surgeon and other officials and are comparable to the circa 1814 houses at the East Barracks former naval hospital, forming an unusual group.
