DEAL DOVER ROAD, Lower Walmer (north west side)

Former kitchen block to rear (north west) of Officers' Mess

GV II

Kitchen, now store. c1795, with later extensions. Flemish bond brick with stretcher bond side ranges, and hipped slate roof. Octagonal plan with later side ranges. Single storey; 3:3-bay range. Former kitchen has a segmental-arched central doorway and boarded door, and 6/6-pane casements in flanking sides, with mid C20 sections to the left, a 2-window range with a right-hand doorway and two further casements, and to the right, a flat-roofed section with a flat-arched end casement. INTERIOR: Sawn timber roof has a possible former smoke outlet at the top. HISTORY: Military kitchens commonly had 8 trenches for coal radiating from a common vent. There were formerly two at Deal. This is a rare example of a free-standing military kitchen, for the nearby barrack blocks.
