Description
The former kitchen block to the rear (northwest) of the Officers' Mess dates from around 1795 and has later extensions. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with stretcher bond side ranges and features a hipped slate roof. The building has an octagonal plan with additional side ranges and is a single storey with a 3:3-bay layout. The former kitchen includes a segmental-arched central doorway with a boarded door, and 6/6-pane casements on either side. To the left, there are mid-20th century sections, a 2-window range with a right-hand doorway, and two additional casements. To the right, there is a flat-roofed section with a flat-arched end casement. Inside, the sawn timber roof has a possible former smoke outlet at the top. Historically, military kitchens typically had eight coal trenches radiating from a common vent, and there were formerly two at Deal. This building is a rare example of a free-standing military kitchen associated with the nearby barrack blocks.
