Description
The main gateway, piers, and flanking railings of the South Barracks date from the late 19th century. They are constructed from brick and Portland ashlar, featuring cast-iron gates and railings. The main gateway is flanked by wickets and quadrant walls, supported by six piers made of banded brick and stonework, each topped with segmental pedimented capitals inscribed with "VR/GIBRALTAR." The central pair of piers includes cast-iron lampstands adorned with crown finials. The gates and railings are decorated with fleur de lys heads and dog bars. This structure served as the main entrance to the South Barracks and is a notable example of its kind.
