Description

A terrace of three married officers' houses, part of the British School of Gunnery, was built between 1861 and 1862. The buildings are constructed of yellow stock brick with rubbed brick detailing to the heads of windows, a truncated brick ridge, gable and side lateral stacks, and a slate roof. They are arranged with a double-depth plan.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a 4:5:4-window arrangement. The front is symmetrical, with projecting coped gables on kneelers one bay from the ends, a brick first-floor string and cill band, and a moulded brick eaves cornice. The central and end bays feature segmental-arched doorways with plate-glass overlights and four-panel doors, while the middle house has double, half-glazed doors from the mid-20th century. Segmental-arched windows are present throughout, with keyed 2/2-pane sashes on the ground floor and plate-glass sashes on the first floor. The front gables have wide, shallow bays with raking roofs and tripartite windows with brick mullions; the first floor of these gables contain timber tripartite windows. The rear elevation is similar, with larger 6/6-pane sashes to the stairs in the outer gables, and a central, single-storey service block.

The interior features a central axial passage, a dogleg transverse staircase from the entrance hall with moulded iron balusters and curtail steps, four-panel doors, and late 19th-century fireplaces.

The Royal Artillery School opened in 1859. The buildings reflect the rank of the occupants through their architectural details.
