Description

These are a pair of surgeon's quarters (Block B) at the British School of Gunnery, with an instructor's quarter added. They were built between 1861 and 1862, with alterations around 1870. The building is constructed of yellow brick with flat brick arches, a brick ridge, gables, and slate roofing. It has a double-depth plan with rear service blocks. The exterior is two storeys and six bays. The houses have a plat band and coped gables on corbelled kneelers. The left-hand cross gable features a canted three-window bay with a parapet. The windows are segmental-arched with rubbed brick detailing, featuring 6/6-pane sashes in the middle of the ground floor and the bay, timber tripartite 4/4-pane ground-floor sashes, 2/2-pane first-floor sashes, and plate-glass central first-floor sashes. The returns have flat-arched porches to the rear with flat-headed doorways, overlights, and half-glazed doors. The rear elevation has projecting single-storey service blocks. The interior includes a central axial passage, a staircase with turned balusters and an uncut string, stone fireplaces with pilasters, and four-panel doors. The Royal Artillery School opened in 1859, and the building's architectural details reflect the rank of the occupant.
