Description
A single officer's quarters within the British School of Gunnery, built in 1871. The building is constructed of yellow stock brick with brick ridge stacks and a slate hipped roof. It follows a double-depth plan.
The exterior displays a long, symmetrical front with 21 windows, articulated by giant pilaster strips, paired at the entrance bays, and extending to overhanging eaves. Plat bands are present at both ground and first floor levels. The main entrances are located centrally and four bays from each end, each framed by rubbed brick segmental arches with 3-pane overlights and double 4-panel doors. A later entrance has been inserted on the right-hand side, accessed by a concrete bridge with iron railings. 6/6-pane sash windows are throughout. Short bridge steps with coped walls span the basement section. The rear of the building features three attached ablution towers.
Inside, the staircases from the entrances have metal balusters and curtail steps, leading to altered rooms originally arranged around a spine wall with fireplaces. The original layout featured rooms at the front and back of the spine wall.
The British School of Gunnery was established in 1859, and the Long Course began in 1860. The barracks provided accommodation for Royal Artillery personnel involved in testing guns, ammunition, and armour for the army and navy.
