Description
The Commandant's House at Horseshoe Barracks was built in 1851 by D Nicholson and Sons from Wandsworth, with extensions added in 1860 and later. It is constructed of yellow stock brick, featuring brick ridge and gable stacks, and has a slate hipped and gabled roof. The house has a double-depth plan and is two storeys high with a four-window range. To the left of the centre, there is a rendered porch that includes a half-glazed door with an overlight, adjacent to a gabled bay that has an added conservatory. The projecting eaves are supported by decorative cast-iron brackets. The interior has not been inspected. This building is one of the earliest on the site, originally serving the superintendent, as Shoebury expanded in 1859 to become the first British School of Gunnery. It is recognized as an important part of a complete mid-19th century barracks.
