Description
Blocks E-H at Shoebury Garrison are a terrace of six non-commissioned officer houses, with one added to the left, now totaling four. They were built in 1861, with drawings signed by Captain Sykes, Royal Engineers, who was the Inspector of Works. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick and feature brick chamfered square ridge stacks and a square end gable stack, topped with a slate roof. Each house is a single storey with a single-depth plan that includes a rear service range.
The exterior consists of a five-bay range, with the left-hand section having six windows. Each house has a symmetrical front with rubbed brick heads above mid-20th century doors and overlights, and horned 4/4-pane sash windows. The left-hand addition has a doorway in the left-hand end gable. The rear gabled service ranges include attic hatches and 6/6-pane sash windows.
Inside, the houses have been altered in the mid-20th century and contain flush four-panel doors. Historically, these houses served as accommodation for sergeants at the first British School of Gunnery, which opened in 1859. They are included as part of a group with the hospital, within a complete mid-19th century barracks.
