Description

A terrace of six Non-Commissioned Officers' houses, now reduced to three, was built in 1861 as part of the School of British Gunnery, opened in 1859. The designs are signed by Captain Inglis of the Royal Engineers. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick with brick chamfered square ridge stacks, a square end gable stack, and have a slate roof. They have a single-depth plan with a rear service range.

The exterior is a single storey, with a five-bay symmetrical front to each house. They feature rubbed brick heads to mid-20th century doors and overlights, and horned four-pane sash windows. A right-hand guard house has a 20th-century verandah and an inserted window. The rear gabled service ranges include attic hatches and six-pane sash windows.

The interior was altered in the mid-20th century and now contains flush four-panel doors. These houses are part of a wider group which includes the hospital, and demonstrate a complete mid-19th century barracks.
