Description
The Cockpit, located about 60 meters southwest of Wothorpe Towers, dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with limestone dressings. Inside, there is a lean-to made of red brick, featuring lacing timbers and slate roofs. The building has an octagonal shape with doorways on the northwest and southeast sides, and lean-to outshuts against the inner sides of the perimeter wall, surrounding a circular cockpit at the center. It is a single-storey structure with segmental-headed doorways on the northwest and southeast sides, both equipped with plank doors and small segmental-headed flanking windows that have iron grilles. Similar windows are found on the other sides. The brick lean-to outshuts inside are against the walls and include wooden lacing; the northwest outshut contains a fireplace, while the southeast has what appear to be remains of nesting boxes. At the center, there is a circular pit with stone rubble revetments.
