Description
Wothorpe Towers are the ruins of a house built around 1600 for Thomas Cecil, the Earl of Exeter and the eldest son of Lord Burghley. The structure is made of ashlar faced rubble and features the remains of a central three-storey block with four square four-storey angle towers. The top storeys of the towers are octagonal with circular openings in the parapets, although the stone ogee roofs are no longer present. The towers have tall window openings with moulded architraves, and small square over-windows adorned with cornices and flat volute decorations. Moulded cornices are present at the floor levels. Originally, there were projections between the towers, one of which contained the staircase. The hall was located in the wing facing northeast, which included a porch and a courtyard that is accessed through a surviving gateway.
