Description

Two gas lamps, dating from the late 19th century, are situated outside numbers 10 and 32 Hart Hill Drive and remain operational. They are constructed of cast iron.

The lamp outside number 10 Hart Hill Drive has a fluted shaft on a circular base, set on an octagonal plinth. The shaft tapers slightly before splaying out to form a plain, banded capital. A simple four-sided lantern of metal and glass, with ventilator, is topped with a simple spike finial, supported by four curved metal brackets.

The lamp outside number 32 Hart Hill Drive also has a fluted shaft on a circular base, set on a square, chamfered plinth. The lower body of the shaft includes decorative moulding in a stylised Egyptian design, and ball flower mouldings are present on the capital. A simple four-sided lantern of metal and glass, topped with a simple spike finial, rests on four curved metal supports.

Hart Hill Drive is a private road developed as a small estate during the latter half of the 19th century. Local knowledge suggests the gas lamps were introduced towards the end of the 19th century, with the three lamps present on the drive exhibiting differing designs, possibly introduced piecemeal or replacing earlier models. The gas lamps are designated at Grade II for their architectural interest as unusual examples of finely-detailed 19th-century gas lamp posts, and for their historic interest as operational examples of a once common form of street lighting.
