Description

Chigwell House is an 18th-century house with some 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of red brick with clay tile roofs. The main block has two storeys and attics, with a gable end facing the road, and is adjoined by a later two-storey addition. The south elevation has a symmetrical four-window range of sash windows without glazing bars. Two gabled dormers with two-light horizontal sashes are set into the attic. A brick band runs along the first-floor level, and a brick dentil cornice sits beneath the eaves. Brick copings define the gables. An integral brick stack is located on the right-hand gable end. The west elevation of the earlier block features a blind window on each floor, while the later addition has a doorway in the right-hand section, featuring a part-glazed door within a Gibbs surround topped by an open pediment. Above the doorway is a two-light casement window with marginal lights. The left-hand windows on both floors of the later block are blind. All windows are treated with gauged brick flat arches, and a brick band is present at the first-floor level.
