Description

SP 9632-9732 WOBURN WOBURN PARK 10/179 Temple approximately 500 m E of Woburn Abbey - II Garden building in form of small classical temple-like structure. Thought to be early C19, possibly by Humphry Repton. Ashlar (clunch) facing, with coursed ironstone exposed to rear elevation. Hipped slate roof. Small rectangular structure open to W elevation. Virtually a Roman Doric portico, distyle in antis. Entablature has triglyphs and guttae to frieze, and modillion cornice. Stone paved floor approached by 3 steps. Rear angles have clasping pilasters. Small rectangular paved area adjoins front of temple, with remains of low balustrade along its western edge. C. Aslet, "Park and Garden Buildings at Woburn", Country Life, March 31st 1983, p. 773.
