Description
The obelisk located approximately 20 metres east of Chicksands Priory was erected around 1816. The original inscription honors the Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and Private Soldiers of the Fortieth Regiment of Foot who fell in battles against revolutionary France from 1795 to 1815, culminating in the Battle of Waterloo and the Capture of Paris. It was established by General Sir George Osborn Bart, their Colonel, in gratitude for the success of British arms and the restoration of peace.
The obelisk features a rendered exterior over a brick and coursed rubble core, standing about four metres high. It has a broad shape and is supported by a rectangular plinth with a simply moulded base and cap, along with inscriptions on three sides. There are two later inscriptions that note the monument's re-siting and restoration: the first by Sir George Robert Osborn in 1856 to commemorate the Treaty of Paris, and the second by the Friends of Chicksands Priory in 1975-1976 to mark 25 years of operations at Chicksands by the United States Air Force, the bicentenary of American Independence, and European Architectural Heritage Year.
