Description
The barns at Warden Abbey Farm date from the late 16th century and were part of Robert Gostwick's Warden Abbey complex. They are constructed from a variety of bricks, primarily red with some yellow, featuring some diaper patterning and 2-inch brickwork, along with stone dressings. The roofs are covered with clay tiles. The structure is L-shaped, with a large barn to the west and a long lower barn to the east.
The west barn has two-stage angle buttresses with stone dressings. The entrance on the west elevation has been altered and repaired. The east elevation features a plank door, with a smaller buttress to the left. The roof structure of the west barn has five bays, with tenoned purlins on two levels, two rows of curved wind braces, and collars and queen struts. The gable ends at the roof level are weatherboarded.
The east barn has a variety of openings on the south elevation, which have been somewhat altered and repaired, including double plank doors on the right that break through the eaves level. The roof structure of the east barn has six bays, with two levels of clasped purlins, collars and struts, and some curved wind braces. The gable end at the roof level is rendered.
