Description

Ridgmont Station, built around 1846 for the Bedford Branch of the old London North Western Railway, is a railway station of group value. It is largely built of roughcast render with decorative applied timber framing, although sections are of yellow brick with red brick dressings. Most roofs are tiled with 20th-century tiles, although some retain fishscale tiles. The station is arranged in a cross-plan with an attic level. It was originally listed in 1877 as part of Ridgmont parish.

The north-western elevation, facing the platform, displays the applied timber framing in a cross and herringbone pattern. A projecting gable features a rectangular bay at ground floor level with mullion and transom windows, topped by a hipped sash window with a drip mould. This gable is flanked by verandah porches with braces forming pointed arches. A left-hand block has a jettied upper floor and a small gabled dormer. The gables are ornamented with pierced decorative bargeboards and finials. A brick ridge stack is found on the projecting gable, and a gable end stack on the left-hand block. The down platform contains a tongue and groove plank shelter with a plain valance.
