Description

Husborne Crawley Lower School and schoolhouse is a building dated 1867, designed by Henry Clutton for the 7th Duke of Bedford. The majority of the structure is covered with colourwashed render and features applied timber framing, along with a high plinth, buttresses, and chimney stacks made of red brick. The roofs are covered with clay tiles. The school consists of a long, single-storey block with attics and a single-storey porch that projects from the right-hand side. The schoolhouse features a two-storey cross-wing at the left-hand end. All windows are mullioned, primarily consisting of three and four lights, with those on the front elevation of the school grouped in pairs just below the eaves. There are part-glazed doors, including one that serves the schoolhouse within the angle formed by the cross-wing, which is sheltered by a sloping hood. The school has a chimney stack that slightly projects from the front elevation, adorned with brick dentil bands at the base and cap of the shaft. The schoolhouse has a multiple chimney stack that also slightly projects from the side wall.
