Description

This listing describes a closely grouped row of 10 headstones located approximately 5 metres south of the south door of the Church of St Peter in Cockayne Hatley, Wrestlingworth. All the headstones are made of limestone and vary in size and shape.

The details of the individual stones from north to south are as follows:

(i) A.C. 1657: A small stone featuring large lettering and simple carved scrollwork at the top.

(ii) Name illegible, dated 1666: This stone is rather worn and has remnants of scrollwork at the top.

(iii) Name illegible, dated July 7, 1676: The inscription is set within a heart-shaped recessed panel, with carved scrollwork at the top that includes cross-bones.

(iv) Inscription illegible, probably from around 1700: This stone features a central inscription flanked by panels of carved geometric decoration and topped with a winged skull. The cresting includes scrolls, swags, and an hour-glass.

(v) E.B., dated September 6, 1676: This stone appears to be sunk into the ground to half its height and has a simple, deeply carved inscription in a recessed rectangular panel. The scrollwork cresting includes cross-bones.

(vi) Circa 1600: This stone is rather worn and features simple scrollwork at the cresting.

(vii) Mary, daughter of Timothe and Mary Bristow, dated 1724: The inscription is surrounded by a circular foliate wreath, and the stone is square-headed with a simply moulded cornice.

(viii) Maria Br(istow?), dated 1687: This stone has deeply carved scrollwork around all edges, with the top cresting incorporating a skull, swag, and cross-bones.

(ix) Timothey (....?), dated 1713: The inscription is flanked by carved drapery and tassels, and is topped with an urn and foliage. The stone has a segmental head with simple moulding.

(x) A simple segmental-headed stone from the 19th century, with an illegible inscription.
