Description
Abbey Square is a terrace of estate cottages arranged around two sides of a courtyard. The terrace was primarily built in the mid-19th century as an addition to an earlier building, likely dating to the late 17th or 18th century, which now forms the northern range. The cottages are constructed from coursed limestone rubble with an old clay tile roof.
The west range comprises three cottages with a two-bay plan. The east elevation has a central gable with decorative bargeboards. The first floor has five two-light casement windows with glazing bars. The ground floor mirrors this arrangement, with each cottage featuring a central, pedimented doorhood supported on slender timber piers. The cottage at the north end is at an angle with the northern range.
The northern range consists of two groups of cottages. A west L-shaped block has a projecting gabled wing to its west side, containing three cottages. The main block of this section has a central gable. The cottages in this block share a similar appearance with casement windows with glazing bars and doorhoods. An east block presents a symmetrical arrangement with projecting gabled wings on either end. This block incorporates the earliest construction. The central wing has two-light casement windows with glazing bars. The west gable end has 20th-century casements, while the east gable features three-light casements.
