Description

Pear Tree Cottage is a mid-19th century estate cottage situated on the south side of High Street in Turvey. It was originally known as Box Cottage. The cottage is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with an old clay tile roof.

The cottage is arranged with a two-room plan and has gable end chimney stacks clad in red brick. The north gable facing the road features bargeboards with moulded timber decoration and drop finials. It has a blocked window on the first floor and a two-light casement with glazing bars on the ground floor. The west elevation has two two-light casements with glazing bars on the first floor, a three-light casement with glazing bars on the ground floor, and a central doorway with a pedimented doorhood supported by two slender square piers. The east elevation incorporates a one-light and a two-light casement with glazing bars on the first floor, and a two-light casement with glazing bars on the ground floor. A small, single-storey brick extension on the south side has no particular architectural interest.

The interior retains original four-panelled doors and plank doors. A first-floor fireplace features a cast iron register grate and an arch plate surround.

Pear Tree Cottage, formerly Box Cottage, and its associated building, The Covey, were built in the mid-19th century as part of the Turvey Abbey estate, which lies to the east. The Covey was once used as a shop and workshop. The buildings are shown on Ordnance Survey maps from 1883 and 1900 and are part of a group that includes similar mid-19th century estate cottages at numbers 1-2 High Street and numbers 1-10 Abbey Square.

The cottage is designated at Grade II for its well-crafted design incorporating local materials and decorative bargeboarding, and for its contribution to a cohesive group of Grade II listed Turvey Abbey estate cottages.
